Fall All Over Franklin!

Fall is as busy a time of the year around Franklin as the summer time is. From Pumpkinfest, to the lighting of the Christmas Tree and the Christmas Parade, Franklin will be bustling with activity on into January.

But for now we will try to just get you through November. How does that sound to you? Besides, time goes so fast Christmas will be here before you know it.

Well, we have added a few more writers to MTF since the summer. There are those writers who submit a story here and there to just get something in they wanted to talk about. And then there are those who submit a little more often so they can tell people what their non-profits are up to.

But then there are those who write pretty regularly, like a few from Macon Users Group, and myself. You will like to come across the regulars. Folks like to come on MTF and look for their favorite writer. Is that you? It could be...

We have a new writer who is from the Murphy area. You will really enjoy her articles about the regional heritage we know and love here. From gardening and canning, to stories of her youth, Blind Pig And The Acorn writer, Tipper Pressley, has contributed some really wonderful articles I know you will enjoy. So check out some of the writines Tipper has on MTF and then visit her site for more and some great music too.

So sit back and enjoy MTF. And who knows... maybe something will stir the creative juices in you and you will get a few stories in for others to enjoy. Don't forget to also get those events in for the calendar.

Veterans Day Week Around Franklin
From birthday celebrations to wreath laying, and parades, and flag raisings, and of course veterans helping provide toys for kids this Christmas, if you were looking for something to do this week there is plenty that involves thanking veterans and helping out in your community. You can see a link below that lists some of the veteran events you can enjoy.

Remember Veterans, young and old, present and past, and their families this week for the sacrifices they give to protect our freedoms. I look forward to seeing you out around town at a number of these different events. Check out the veteran events now!

Cowee Elementary Awards Ceremony
Cowee Elementary School held their Awards Ceremony for the first 9 weeks on Friday, November 6 at 2 pm. Family and friends were on hand to watch the kids receive their award for Terrific Kid, given to them by Kiwanis Club sponsors Chris Brouwer and Patty Howells. The ‘A’ Honor Roll, ‘A and B’ Honor Roll and Cowee’s own Citizenship Merit “Gem Dandy” Award were recognized in front of their peers and the community. It was a very well attended event to show support for the hard work these kids put in. See the photos of the recipients below. Check out the student photos here

The Big Steel Rail
by Blind Pig and the Acorn

I’ve always wanted to “hop a train”-but have never ridden in a real train-as close as I’ve come is to ride in one of those sight-seeing contraptions at amusement parks.

I became interested in logging railroads when I worked at Lake Logan in Haywood County, NC. At the time, the Lake was owned by Champion International. Lake Logan was built to facilitate production at the Canton paper mill in the 1930s. In addition, in later years, Champion used Lake Logan as a meeting facility. Folks would come for a conference or a workshop and also get to enjoy a little R&R-fishing, canoing, hiking-and party time in the Boojum Cave (the bar).

Along the hallway leading to the cave there were amazing pictures-enlarged to 3 or 4 feet in length-images of tough railroad logging crews from the early 1900s. The pictures defied logic-trains hanging on the steep mountains sides-hauling logs bigger than any I’ve ever seen. Continue with the article here...

Blue Ridge "One Nation" single is #35 on the Charts

Blue Ridge Gospel Music QuartetThe following is one of the blog entries from the first night of Fall Colors Concert at the Performing Arts Center

Sound checks are done... we have eaten some food that the Performing Arts Center has provided us... What Eric didn't grab we got to share.

Photos are done. We spent our time in the Green Room getting the photos out of the way and preparing for the concert. Phil Drake, owner of the Performing Arts Center will start off the night with the prayer, and then introduce the night's emcee, Danny Jones, Editor of the Singing News.

Then Mark Bishop will start the entertainment off, the Mark Trammell Trio will go next, and followed up by Blue Ridge... I will try to keep you posted through out the night.

Blue Ridge performing their hit single, One Nation (35 on the charts). Here are some photos so far from the night...
